15: Why I Hike and Camp Solo as a Woman Nearing 60

 

Over the last year or so, I have fallen in love with backpacking. I'm not talking about some fleeting schoolgirl crush. We are talking all-in obsession that doesn't seem to be fading.

So what's the deal? Why do I apparently risk life and limb to exhaust myself before sleeping on the ground, often with rain battering the outside of my tent, all so I can wake up in morning stiff, sore and dirty to start all over again?
